A career as a data professional offers a uniquely diverse and exciting set of opportunities. Hear from Digital Futures consultants below as they describe how a career in data will allow you to follow your passions, make you an in-demand and valuable asset to the world’s most innovative companies and position you to directly contribute to impact decision-making.
Data is the new currency of the world. As a result, data skills are high in demand across all industries. Whether its financial services, environmental sustainability, or artificial intelligence (AI), the data professional’s toolkit is incredibly adaptable and provides constant opportunities for growth and innovation.
Nathan Mwasuku, Digital Futures data engineering consultant, discusses the significance of data and how the demand for it has created a thriving job market. “All companies are trying to get more and more data and because of that, there are so many job opportunities within data – you’ve got data analytics, data engineering, data science and, increasingly, job roles in AI.”
In Nathan’s view, AI represents more of an opportunity than a threat to data professionals. “Even if some job roles might be lost to AI, more job roles will definitely spring up as a result of other ones being lost”, says Nathan. Fundamentally, data skills are very transferable from one data discipline to another and are incredibly relevant to powering the AI revolution. Nathan continues, “In terms of the triangle of data engineering, science and data analytics, you are always going to be using the similar sort of applications. By learning some new skills on top of what you already know, you can successfully move from one discipline to another.”
Learning data skills and frameworks gives you a comprehensive and transferable skillset, helping you to future-proof your career and capitalise on the ever-increasing demand for data skills.
A career in data offers amazing opportunities to learn and utilise multiple skills, across technical and non-technical domains. From building solutions to managing multiple stakeholders across an organisation, a career in data allows you to explore a variety of different skills and disciplines every day.
For Digital Futures consultant Alex Mudd, it’s that variety and ability to unlock his curiosity that has made his data career so fulfilling so far. “A career in data is so diverse and there’s really so many different skills and things that come into it. That suits me perfectly because I don’t like to do the same thing every day”, says Alex.
Thinking about his day-to-day role, Alex has emphasised how important it is to him that his role is multi-disciplinary which helps to support his learning and development. “It has a great balance of technical and non-technical skills. On the technical side you’ve got a million different solutions, coding languages and methodologies that you can use to solve problems”, says Alex. “But then on the other side, one minute you could be talking to a supplier and the next minute you’re talking to a customer, or you could be talking to a portfolio manager and then you’re talking to a chief engineer. There’s so many different avenues and different elements to it that every day ends up being different. And through doing so many things, you just learn such a wide variety of different skills.”
Being a data professional gives you the unique ability to contribute meaningfully to measurable decisions across all levels of your organisation. The importance of data in guiding decision making makes you instrumental in the running of businesses, from its strategic goals and direction to daily, on the ground decisions.
For Digital Futures consultant Harry Murphy, the data skills he learned at the Digital Futures Academy have enabled him to have a direct impact on the organisation. “Familiarity with Python has meant that I can automate a lot of the searches that I do – it’s helped me look through our records and find comparisons or to identify where we have been spending money on circuits we don’t use anymore”, Harry describes. “The direct impact of that is it saves the company money by being able to cancel things we don’t use.”
Harry’s example perfectly shows off one of the most distinct benefits of a career in data. If you take satisfaction and pride in seeing your work making tangible differences to the daily operation and future of your company, data is the perfect vehicle to maximise your impact. Starting a career in data will give you the opportunity to help drive businesses forward. You will uncover information that helps teams refine and develop their work, as well as helping to drive efficiency and strategy from the top down.
