Finding success when progressing in your tech career – top tips from our consultants

For individuals looking to start or change their careers, our Future Talent Programme provides you with the skills and experience for success.

We spoke to some of our deployed consultants who have shared their advice about their experiences at the Digital Futures Academy and in their roles as consultants with our clients. From their top tips to the key lessons they’ve learned, read more about how they’ve been able to drive their own success to start and progress in their careers in technology.

“Embrace failure”

“From a personal perspective, I’ve always had issues with failure. You get into a mindset that failure is bad because we always feel the need to succeed and meet targets, which puts a lot of pressure on you. But, that doesn’t really allow you to experiment and if things go wrong, you get frustrated.

If you embrace failure, you come to realise that failure doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong, it just means that something isn’t working. Instead, you can see it as a learning opportunity, an opportunity to ask questions. It incentivises repetition and then suddenly you go from failure to being a total expert. But you would never have got to that level if you hadn’t failed a few times along the way.”

“Say yes to any opportunity”

“I think a piece of advice that I’d offer people is to just say “yes”. There will be so many opportunities that come your way, and you need to embrace all of them. Doing that with Digital Futures has done wonders for my confidence and personal development.

Even if you know that you’re going to be anxious or that you’re going to be nervous – that shouldn’t make you not want to do it. It should make you want to do it more. Ultimately, the only way you’re going to improve or get better at your job is to keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.”

“Keep asking questions”

“I would say throughout your journey, ask a lot of questions and be interactive. That approach really helped me at the Digital Futures Academy. As soon as you stop asking questions, you’ll start to lose track of what’s actually happening because things move quickly.

The same applies on client side as well. Be open, ask questions, say yes to things that people ask for. That doesn’t just help you expand your knowledge but also gets you noticed for being proactive. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.”

“Be comfortable with change”

The tech industry is constantly evolving. Even just five years ago, AI wasn’t really mentioned, so you need be comfortable with change. A lot of people in tech can be resistant to change and that really hinders yours and your team’s success. You inevitably won’t be doing the same thing in a few years’ time so be prepared for new developments, working on new things and just generally being adaptable.”

Vianka Govender, Digital Futures Consultant

“Always be curious”

“The only stupid question is the one that you don’t ask. Asking questions shows that you’re curious, that you’re trying to do it right and that you’re putting the effort in. Even if you’re just seeking a clarification on something. The moment you stop asking questions means there’s nothing else to explore – and there should always be something to explore. Nobody will look down on you if you ask a question – if you don’t ask the question, you’re only holding yourself back.”
